Young Wars take solid senior steps

Young Wars take solid senior steps

Senior rugby match report - East Grinstead 24 - 21 WRFC

A positive first hit out for a youthful Warlingham squad filled with hungry academy players and rapidly maturing homegrown lads committed to playing for the club.

The sides shared 3 converted tries in a competitive and even game in the bright Sussex sunshine, with East Grinstead kicking a late long range penalty to take the win. But Warlingham can be delighted with their days work, bringing the hard work and unified attitude from training to the pitch.

Getting on the front foot early on, Warly moved the ball well, won the ruck battles and drew penalties with quick play and strong defence. Backrow Olly Wilson capitalised on the field position with the first try and conversion, crashing over from a short range tap penalty. Wilson was also held up over the line moments later after great work by Joel Munroe, Lewis Hazeldine and Matt Barnett.

Youngster Fred Webzell scored a brilliant try from full back as he capitalised on excellent off loads in midfield and raced through to skin the full back and touch down in the corner. Mark Chatfield converted from the touch line to keep Warlingham ahead.

A large squad and plenty of changes gave everyone a chance to get into the game. The second half saw returning student Sam Jones barrelling his way over the line with a big reach out to score Warlingham’s third try as he exploited space created by quick ruck ball and dynamic attacking shape. Chatfield converted the try.

The spirit in the side was evident and demonstrated clearly by a last ditch tap tackle from front rower Matt Barnett to deny a flyer from East Grinstead. An all action performance from Barnett and commitment to the cause.

Huge congratulations and praise to all the teenagers playing their first senior games of rugby. These players really got stuck in and lead the way. Exciting to see their development in senior rugby. A fantastic crowd of Warly supporters were out in force. Thanks for the support, it always means a lot to the players.

Lots to work on but lots to be proud of too. Pre-season continues with excellent training sessions, great medical and a brilliant vibe about the place. New players are always welcome and encouraged. Here’s to the 2024/25 season! Thanks to EG, amazing hosts.
