WRFC 49 - 7 Old Beccehamians

Warlingham U16s got their season underway with a solid home win against tough local opponents.

The spectacular storm of the previous night had passed through and conditions were good for the exciting brand of rugby this Warly side are renowned for. It was the visitors from just over the Kent border though who dominated possession and territory for long spells of the opening stanza. The Beccs big ball carriers made yards through the middle and fed their elusive runners decent front foot ball.

However, the Wars defence was patient and well connected, soaking up pressure and forcing mistakes. 2 interception tries came as Beccs tried to force the pass and a decisive counter attack from their own half with quick hands along the line saw Warlingham lead 21-0 at the break.

It’s a sign of a strong team and coaching set up that there was a degree of frustration despite the scoreline as the teams turned round for the second half. Beccs were a fraction quicker over the ball and were able to break down the blue and whites attacking continuity at times.

The visitors then started the second half brightly and scored close to the posts with good hands and powerful runs around the fringes from the pack. But Warlingham finally shook off any remaining cobwebs to outflank Beccs and run in some classy tries to seal a well deserved victory. A highlight coming as forwards and backs moved the Beccs defence around before picking out the winger with a deft cross-field kick to score. So some resilience and some flashes of brilliance with amazing handling and elusive running for the home crowd to enjoy.

Tries were scored by Fred Mitchell, Charlie Thompson, Jack Bosher, Josh Sey and a brilliant debut hatrick from Wiggy. Fred Mitchell was perfect from the tee with all seven conversions.

Thanks to Old Beccs for making the trip over and we’re pleased to hear their injured player is doing ok.

Next week the U16s travel to another Kent side in Tunbridge Wells. All support is always very well received by the players.

Well done Warly.
